The sunday morning view
Its the first thing I saw when I woke up after a gruelling 30 hour trip half way around the world...to a city named after the country's founder..Columbus..been here couple of times so far but I would say its one of the better reception I've received so far.
It struck how lucky and at times bordering ungratefulness we are back home when I overheard in my last flight last night out of Chicago O'Hare airport. The ground crew's welcome address caught my attention, welcoming us on board on United Airways on their 85th anniversary. Upon that announcement, being privileged sitting at the front of the plane, heard the senior attendants comment, 85 ...so? That's all? She was joking, as she went on to say that she's just clocked 40 years! working for the airline..phew..I thought 10 years was already bad enough..
She later, being as friendly as many African Americans that Ive come across..she went on further to chat with the front seat passengers about the most senior attendant that United has.....81 years!!! yup 81 years old and still flying, not that often she said...just enough to keep his medical benefits!...Yup, 81 years, still working, risking his life I must say...just to be able to afford his medical costs. How many 81 year old , have u seen still actively working to support themselves...worst still to able to afford their expenses especially in their latter stages of their golden lives..
That, made me realise how lucky we are in Malaysia..maybe at least for a couple years more..
We at times take it for granted, by paying RM1 , we can gain access to one of best health care in the region...Not sure how long this will last, as there has been attempts to put through a new medical bill..Its in the pipeline...but not until the next general election...lets see ...In the mean time, let me see I think I'm due for a medical check up ..
