The ground crew's welcome address caught my attention, welcoming us on board on United Airways on their 85th anniversary. Upon that announcement, being privileged sitting at the front of the plane, heard the senior attendants comment, 85 ...so? That's all? She was joking, as she went on to say that she's just clocked 40 years! working for the airline..phew..I thought 10 years was already bad enough..
She later, being as friendly as many African Americans that Ive come across..she went on further to chat with the front seat passengers about the most senior attendant that United has.....81 years!!! yup 81 years old and still flying, not that often she said...just enough to keep his medical benefits!...Yup, 81 years, still working, risking his life I must say...just to be able to afford his medical costs. How many 81 year old , have u seen still actively working to support themselves...worst still to able to afford their expenses especially in their latter stages of their golden lives..
That, made me realise how lucky we are in Malaysia..maybe at least for a couple years more..
We at times take it for granted, by paying RM1 , we can gain access to one of best health care in the region...Not sure how long this will last, as there has been attempts to put through a new medical bill..Its in the pipeline...but not until the next general election...lets see ...In the mean time, let me see I think I'm due for a medical check up ..

Walking away with prints...

The beach teaches the willing heart a lot ...especially if you take time to walk its sands. And I just realised one small detail. When we walk the smooth white sands....we don't see our own footprints willingly especially when time is not our good friend.
This revelation happened on a beautiful friday morning, accompanied by the hornbill's melodious cries and the shade of the clouds, I was so focused in reaching my destination. The place where the fringes of beach where the forest meets the sea.Half way through, I realised that I was missing something, when I stopped to pick up a treasure washed ashore from the deep blue sea. The tiny sea shell, made me realise that I was actually making a temporary print of which would be lost forevever when the jealousy waves decide to wash away leaving their very own mark.
Well, in our journey through this beautiful life, we most of the times forget the the mark we leave behind, especially in this hurried and instant world. Sometimes they are something that we want to remember and sometimes something we want forget.

To booze or not to booze

Well it’s official, nowadays parties without any alcoholic drink is extinct like the dodo. The very mention of a party, will trigger the “happy” endorphins to run all over the body.
Alcohol in any form, be it from the elegant grape gardens, from the oak barrels right to the most common malt flavored smoothies always make the speechless to speak freely, the meekest to wear their hearts on their sleeves and the smartest to act as fools totally.
As much I enjoy socialising and partying, one of the decisions that I've made this year, after couple months of contemplation, was decide to become a teetotaler....But the decision, by far has been one of the most difficult one, I've ever made. The reason is tremendous peer presure.Yes, even at this age, it takes lots of will power and pride swallowing to say that your not boozing especially to your football buddies.
The looks that you have duck and comments that you need swallow was never imagined. Picture this, a big birthday bash in a popular club, with me SIPPING COLA LEMONADE.I was thinking of making up many stories like being allergic to alcohol to some creative ones like ive gone organic but finally decided to stick to the plain simple I've stopped boozing.
Why, some may ask and I must admit , even though the thought has been running on my mind for sometime, it was inspired by a book. It seemed to be cool and I decided overnight. I converted. Joining the ranks of Beckham, Amitabh Bachan , Akon , Karl Lagerfeld, Issac Asimov and many others...

How I feel now after couple of months and dozen of parties and dinners. It simply feels GOOD! I must say, you just feel in control, to pass off the 12 year whisky or the latest brew. It certainly feels good and I dont think I've lost out on any fun either.
So, if anyone's needing an item for their New Year's Resolution...give it a thought! It might change you forever......CHEERS!

p.s As for my resolution list....hmmm....coffee......we'll see....

Grumpy Friday the 6th...

I must admit, it was a grumpy friday for me !

Unlike most ,whom would have been cherishing the awaited weekend, thanking god the whole day.

The funny thing is, I dont even know why? Work was kinda slow, nothing that exciting. Traffic was better than expected. Mysterious...

Maybe, the weather could be cause. Or even the probable root cause.
Ah yes, like a patient recovering from amnesia , it just struck me. The early working hours seem to have cast some light to this mystery of the day. It was a cloudy day. The whole day, the usual sun was not to be seen. Being a morning person, the morning sun always seems to energize me..right from the moment I hit the shower, till I reach the office. It's my early morning caffiene substitute. So, what's that got to do with my mood today?

I recall that studies have shown that the weather and the seasons have an impact on a person's mood and other biological functions. So, one cloudy day has this impact? Or am I just looking for a blame. Blaming it on the unpoured rain.... on Friday the 6th , a week before the famous Friday of all.

Yet another unsolved mystery for the day.

Al Gore _ The Enviromental Alarmist, Just an Investor or both?

This interesting article in the New York Times, is real eye-opener.
Al Gore, the nearly President of the United States, former Vice President, a former governer and the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize could be the biggest winner in the global crusade in curbing global warming.

If you read the article, it seems that due to Al Gore's popularity, connectivity and ingenuity and through his venture capital firm ,where he's a partner Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, he's already raked in over US 1 billion becoming the world's first carbon billionaire.
A cool sum for a losing presidential candidate.I guess, he would make another couple of quick millions by writing a book on his career turnaround. More efforts need to made to promote this noble cause.
Recently, there have been articles higlighted in the media on the plight of the of speechless corals and the shy turtles of the east coast.
As a monthly donor to WWF Malaysia, I did my small bit in sigining the petition on the banning of turtle egg consumption. Unfortunately, some might feel the world has come to an end if the expectations are not met...

There's a saying which used to be a mantra back in good ole school days..."Aim for the stars" reaching the coconut tree would be a consolation....but never be disappointed with that acheivement....

Blog holiday...

It looks like my blog took a long 4 month holiday...didn't realise that it has been so long until a buddy made a comment of my postings...

The last was posting was actually, before my trip to one of the most amazing islands off the east coast of Malaysia. Perhentian... it literally means "A Stop" in Bahasa Malaysia...

I would say it Malaysia's very own Maldives or Bahamas....

Must admit..time actually stood still over there....

The picturesque island with the crystal clear waters was spellbinding. It was love at first sight....

However the joy and excitement of reaching our island destination slowly turned to slight panic and worry as we didnt manage to get our accomodations booked in advance. So we decided to try our luck...on reaching the smaller island...there was this frantic walkabout looking for a roof over our heads...luckily we managed to find one..a dorm with clean toilets! For 6 young guys....this was far more than enough...
The white sand and the clear water...was mind blowing despite the scorching sun that was burning our feet....thank god I brought my generic crocs with me<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375997032442894722" style="DISPLAY: block; Then after some email flying and an alor street dining, everyone got excited.
The day for the island holiday to Perhentian was fixed , 30 April - 3rd May 2009.
That, followed by search for the best flight deals to Kota Bahru as everyone can and wanted to fly.
Then, this is the interesting part....despite my insistence to check out the accommodation first as being a veteran in last minute holiday pay through your nose kinda experiences, flights were booked. began...Internet, phone contacts, friend contacts, blogs, emails, travel agents, resulted in the worst nightmare,"semua sudah penuh, kan cuti panjang" ..all rooms fully booked replies...
A glimmer of hope came, as some response that we got was that, there are chalets that don't do advance bookings as they only entertain walk-ins...phew...so...
The adventure begins....hence sparked off this posting.....

My OZ trip'08_Day1_ Adventure Begins Part2

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295817489510797058" style="FLOAT: left; That small pain eventually turned into a nightmare two days later. For me big questions start cropping up during this unpleasant time, maybe that’s the only time I stop thinking about chasing the deadline, the next paycheck, the next big break.
We only start thinking about our health, when there’s pain, be it minor or major, from a fall or a knock, from a sprain or a strain, or even from a whip of a cane. The pain which I presume was from my hip joint slowly started sending pricking pain up my spine each time I moved and turned simple pleasures such as of rolling around on my “dreamland” into a self inflicted torture ritual.
Doctors say that pain is the alarm from the body indicating something is not right. It eventually be given due attention commonly with a pain killer, mostly unwillingly at times with visit to the “medicine man”. Which makes you think, if pain is the alarm for our body, then all living organism should have its own alarm? Leaves on plants turn yellow if they’re “sick”, birds stop singing and other animals groan and hide away when they’re not too well disappear from their busy routine.
What about our “Big Mama”, the life source of trillions of life forms? Will she fall sick? Will she recover if she’s sick? And how will she recover? Again big questions, but a timely one.
Timely because I just realized that how fragile our life is. How dependent we are on our “Big Mama”, like a new born nursing under the mother’s care.
The recent haze has thought us a lesson, a simple lesson, a lesson that needs serious attention. Which is never, ever take “Big Mama” for granted. All of sudden everybody was talking about her.
Suddenly the air quality index updates took prime spot even nudging the stock market index of its pinnacle. Never has the wind direction been so closely followed, the city skyline been so cherished and rain been so welcomed. Is this her alarm? Is this her way of telling us that she’s not well, she’s sick or getting sicker by the day? Maybe it is. She’s sending a message to all mankind, that she’s needs attention.
One fine Sunday morning, as abrupt as it started, the pain on my right hip, just disappeared.
Maybe the “gamat” ointment treatment from Langkawi prescribed by my mom really worked. The magical cures from the seas seemed to have swept away my painful ordeal. But as usual as the eastern sunrise, man always has a short memory. The big question on finding cures for mankind, which popped up when I started having my pain seemed to have been swept away too. Lost in the deep ocean, in the seabed of lost worries along with many other “big questions” and maybe with luck, return to my shores of my thoughts, in more pleasant manner someday. Coincidently the same happened to the haze. Just disappeared on fine morning; finally the blue sky was visible, groups of clouds everywhere and never has the morning’s sun rays been so welcomed with wide smiles.
All the talk about the haze, the weather, the winds, the fires and also about “Big Mama” just faded away together with brisk sales of masks. As the “dust” settles down, as the blame war cools down and the pharmacist’s monthly sales up, the haze remains in memory at least for now, buried among in the newspaper archives till the next one happens.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://halochapter.blogspot.com/2008/06/something-from-my-archives-hazy-pain.html' title='Something from my archives ; Well, that quote from the award winning movie , Forrest Gump, seemed to have stuck in my head ever since I stepped out from the cinema say nearly 15 years ago...

But besides that , life is also not always a bed of roses....the bed has more thorns in them then the nectar laden, perfume drenched roses.

Roses being the wonderfull, joyfull things in our life while the thorns remind us of its challenges. A carefull florist may avoid some of the thorns while plucking the roses, but now and then, a thorn might prick her till she bleeds.

But she doesn't cut down the rose plant because of the thorns. She may just heal her fingers with an antiseptic and a band aid while moving on smelling and plucking more roses.

In life, its the same , now and then there would be thorns or challenges ,they might hurt , some big ones, some small ones.

Some might hurt greater , some might cut deeper . We move on with an band aid or a simple sucking of the fingers.

Worrying about the next thorn would sometimes make us forget to smell those roses.

And of course not forgeting the chocolates....

Matter of perception, the greatest bug!

Its very interesting when 2 people looking at same picture/situation , have 2 different opinions of what they see.
We see things, through a lens of filters, a subconscious filter that is developed since we were young.
Recently, I was just parking my car after a car park hunt. As I was heading to the bank , I saw a relatively young healthy couple getting out from a car that just parked as well. They seemed to be heading towards a clinic right opposite me....I turned to get a better view of them and just then the girl, yea, she should be in her late teens or early 20's...looked at me as well while taking quite small steps up the steps to the clinic.
After that glance exchange, I don't know why I had this thought, but it just hit me,"blink"! at the very moment as I was walking away...'She must be either getting a pregnancy test or planning for an abortion"
A flawed perception, I would never know, just wondered also of what she would have been thinking when she glanced at me. What would have been her thoughts?
Interesting moment....perceive, assume and derive an opinion.... a recipe for disaster if the perception was flawed from the very beginning...I just painted a negative picture of the couple by my mere perception.
How many of us , do this day in, day out. Keeping record of some of our perception, that eventually form part of our filters and be ingrained into us.
The couple might just going in to get some flu medication that has been keeping the guy awake for the past 2 days, with his final exams looming around the corner...

I will never know....the simpler way is to assume innocence but with a dose of caution.

Critical thinking or fault finding?

Once I had an argument, a discussion about belief system, ah yes, religion.
Unwise topic to argue upon as many wars have been fought without any winner with only humanity as a sure loser.
It brought up a quite a interesting view of which has intrigued me ever since. It was about being critical and using a critical mind on observing the world around us.

What is being critical? A deeper question that I had imagined, is it just a mere expression of thoughts that simply shoot down ideas or beliefs, or even a fault finding mission on everything that is said or written.
Is being critical simply being a non-conformist to opinions or ideas of others?
Is a person that doesn't agree to the norms of the society, the century old traditions and dogmas , a critical thinker?
Quite interesting enough, ever since we were young during formal education, we are asked to think. Think about solving a problem , a riddle, a test , question but interesting enough the most important part of thinking , which is how, is quite often left out or not emphasised.
Thinking or even thinking critically ,has a far more deeper defination than that I've had put forwad earlier.
Critical thinking as defined by the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking, 1987A is ;
Is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness.
Critical thinking varies according to the motivation underlying it. When grounded in selfish motives, it is often manifested in the skillful manipulation of ideas in service of one’’s own, or one's groups’’, vested interest.
As such it is typically intellectually flawed, however pragmatically successful it might be. When grounded in fairmindedness and intellectual integrity, it is typically of a higher order intellectually, though subject to the charge of "idealism" by those habituated to its selfish use. Source :http://www.criticalthinking.org

So, as I had mentioned earlier, far more deeper meaning and as I observe , the term critical thinking is far often abused and missused by individuals that seek to satisfy themselves with pseudo-victory of an argument for arguments sake.
I think......

EMo-Check Enlightment

Its back to work after a relatively long weekend, my grey matter don't seem to matter about anything at the moment... Been starring into my laptop the whole morning....I think I need another caffeine fix, oh my what would we do without those coffee beans.
Now I seriously wish that we have 3 day weekends....time seemed to have been moving slowly for the past three days....enjoyed doing some of my stuff like running thru my old files and drawers, found some interesting items, things that I thot were lost forever.
Its not only, things that you, find, sometimes you find things about yourself.

Three days holidays, three days for slowing things down, having time for yourself and your loved ones, doing simple things.
About my self, I just realised how my mood could effect people around, knowingly and unknowingly we might send across messages to people around us through our facial expressions, body language and even the tone of our voice.

I saw that yesterday, it surprised me for a moment, then made me wonder whether I have been going about this way for god knows how long in my day to day life.

It was emo-check moment that I found very enlightening.....

Which reminds me of the words from The Enlightened ONE "All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him"

Maybe something that everyone of us could use , in this hurried and worried world.

From a bump till they jump

Its a wonder when you realise how fast time flies, you could really see the effects of time through the development of a child, yes..from when they start showing themselves as a bump in their mother's womb through to becoming mini-adults, walking up-right proudly seeking attention and affection.

I had just walked into the elevator going up and I realised a tiny rascal complaining to his mom , whom happend to be my floor neighbour. We exhanged smiles and a few nods and the tiny tot felt insulted so he was acknowledged as well. A couple of forced "Hi's" from the mr.DennisInTheMaking then we were best friends. Then as the lift reached our floor before the door opened , I blurted out to the mother, " Your youngest?" "Yes, was her reply with a sheepish smile...well that's her fourth one as far as I know, not sure whether the last one.

As we parted ways to our own apartments, then I just had a moment of truth. How time really flies, I could still vividly remember her with her kids, hurled together after school and shopping outings, then she had her bump, saw it grow bigger by the day, all this of course witness during our elevators moments.

Then, Mr.Sunshine arrived, along came grandma, all the way from Penang to take care of her latest branch to the family tree.
Our elevator moments, grew less frequent by the day and months due my busyness, till I completely forgot about mr.Sunshine till today. He must be at least 2 years old now, 2 years had past by without me really noticing it until I saw that little rascal. Well, I guess we tend to go on with life in the same way until one day, suddenly in the mirror you see an unfamiliar face...strange but true... and I didn't get his name as well

Philosophical thots!

Had this peculiar philosophical brainwave, sought a doctor's view on this... Simply comparing to reference character to character.....so if u have a reference which is spelled the American way and you sent a document which had used Her Majesty's Language way of spelling ....small problem but of course , anything can be settled with the interference from the wallet.
Which is the reason to spark a Halo moment...
Actually naM weN...is just the mirror image word of New Man....
So why the mirror image? Mirror images have been around for some time, even acknowledged by science.. chemical compounds have mirror images, they might be the same molecule but have diffferent chemical effect...
So what's with this mirror image of the word "new man"....its just plain simple. The New Man from the mirror image example shows that his not easily comprehended. Not easily understood. And more often misunderstood. The new man emerging from the post-women liberation era, have been neglected, their needs not understood and most often criticized. Men nowadays, have evolved. For the better. They do their laundry, they even cook, take care of babies, and some even can cry:-).

Zzzzz

Zzzzzzz

Smell of new

I simply love it, the smell of new.
